A thorough history and physical exam always precede treatment or additional testing. When appropriate, blood and stool tests are ordered. More advanced diagnostic tools such as upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, and various scans, such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI may be recommended as needed to get to the bottom of a particular problem or for a routine screening when appropriate.
